In 1926 the government of the newly founded Irish Free State formed a committee led by poet W. B. Yeats to plan for new coinage. The Irish harp would serve as the national symbol on the front, while the backs were to feature a series of animals important to Ireland’s mainly agricultural economy. The three pence, featuring a hare, was minted from 1928 to 1968.
